Long into the small hours of the morning on a bank of the River Douro in Porto, a group of Wolves fans could be heard singing an ode to their hero, to the tune of Abba’s Voulez-Vous.
Brilliant. A great tribute to a fantastic player. He was the type of player we always love at wolves; hard working, gritty and feisty. He really had that intelligence to know what to do, and the ability to pull it off. A privilege to have seen him in gold and black.
Very moving Johnny. I spent a long time scrolling social media yesterday reading all the tributes, the recollections, watching the Leicester hatrick and the quarter final goal videos repeatedly every time I encountered them. It's transported me right back to what really was a unique time in my over 40 years of being a Wolves devotee. Jota was a fundamental part of the best time to be a Wolves fan in my adult lifetime, however briefly that was, which clearly resonates through so many of those heartfelt tributes. He and Nuno's team made us happier about football than we have ever been before and since. I loved every one of that ultimate 11 of Rui, Boly, Saiss, Coady, Doc, Jonny, Ruben, Moutinho, Jota, Raul and Adama. These were special, special times. Times we will be lucky to experience again. That's why it hits so hard, on top of the fact he was taken from his young family in the absolute prime of his personal and professional life. He helped make us believe the impossible was possible. So unbelievably sad.
Lovely, Johnny. I too have that Spurs goal set up as my favourite memory of Diogo J. Was in the home seats keeping my mouth shut throughout the game, but couldn't help a little purr when he beat his man and actually cried when Raul slotted it. I just loved him as player and I'll be wearing my 2018-19 "W88" top today in memory of a sublimely talented and lovable Wolf. An absolute tragedy to lose him.
Superb piece Johnny, thank you - encapsulating the man and that period for Wolves. So, so sad that you had to write it. RIP Diogo Jota. Bless his family.
A magnificent tribute to Diogo, so very well written Johnny and epitomises what we Wolves fans felt about Diogo. A magnificent player and easily in the top 5 I've seen in the gold and black.
As always Johnny you have captured the essence of the man…..I don’t believe I was the only wolves fan who’s lip quivered and shed a tear when I first heard the news In disbelief- I hope the club has a fitting permanent tribute to the man outside Molineux the in years to come will have Grandads like myself saying to young Wolves Supporters “ Ah now this guy was a Star ..and best of all Always a Wolf .
Being going to Molineux since 1962 and have seen some pretty awesome players- Diogo is certainly very high on the list of great players. He bought a great feeling of confidence to the team and as fans we adored him and what he did . Always a smile and always gave everything in every game. Halcyon days that will stay in the memory of all Wolves fans for ever.
This was so hard to read. So poignant. I became a dad during the Nuno era. My first was born in 2017. A boy. My second in 2019. Another boy. I still can't imagine what his family must be going through having lost two sons in such horrific circumstances. So young. At the height of their skills. Diogo played for working class clubs like a working class lad would. But he was intelligent and skilful with it. As a 43 year old wolves fan, who's seen some good, bad and ugly - that's THE perfect combination. The Man Utd goal was great. The Leicester hat trick as well. But do we forget the winner against Chelsea in our first season back? A tap in yes, but it kicked started a wonderful season. 💔❣️😓💔
Well done Johnny an excellent article that brought back some wonderful memories, it was a magic time with Diogo, Ruben, Raul and the rest of their team mates…but such a sad, so sad time now. Still hard to believe what’s happened. All our thoughts are with Diogo and Andre’s family.
Spot on Johnny. I’m so sad. We loved Jota and wish he could have stayed with Wolves longer. He helped create some of our best recent memeories and a European tour.
In hindsight, he deserved to win the medals he has at Liverpool.
Thanks Johnny lovely tribute I don't think it's a coincidence that we started to slide after he left there was something about him a spirit that we have never managed to recapture they had a little tribute to him at the black Sabbath concert it was a chocker I was really sorry when he joined Liverpool but in retrospect I am glad he did and was able to win the trophies he deserved so sad for his family RIP Diogo
Thanks Johnny. Each time I read this I’m transported to a magical time for Wolves fans. A time when I often said these are likely to be the best football times ever in our lifetime. A time for reflection on how friendships were formed through chance meetings in airport lounges and European bars. We always said it was dashed hope that hurt us, our craving for the magic moments the Little Wolf and the pack generously gave us to be rewarded with silverware. The achievements were as phenomenal as the performances though, Wolves over-achieved, and Jota’s massive contribution on and off the pitch, and how he enriched our lives with the sheer excitement and pleasure he gave us will never be forgotten by those who witnessed it.

The best tribute I've read.
A beautiful tribute.
Brilliantly apposite.
A lovely and fitting tribute. Well said.
